Car numbers have been based on constructors championship position since 1996 but in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! what I can only assume to be a very poorly timed April Fools joke, the FIA is allowing the drivers to choose their own car number in 2014.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The number '1' will continue to be reserved for the reigning champion but numbers 2 through 99 will be available for the choosing. In a case where a conflict occurs, preference goes by championship finishing position.
In other bizarre news, the FIA is considering renaming the series as the Rolex Formula 1 World Championship, powered by Infiniti®.*

It would be completely out of character for Kimi to pick anything other than 69.

Who cares what numbers are on the cars?
Of all the fucky things going on in F1's rule changes this time around, this is easily the least fucky.

I'm waiting for whoever picks the number 88.

Honestly this is a good thing. Merchandise doesn't become stale from year to year if a driver can be associated with a number.

Yeah, thats what I'm hoping, lol. Daniel Ricciardo tweeted a little while ago about how he was going to "keep his number a secret" with a winky face so maybe he got the naughty #69 if Ferrari told Kimi to keep the shenanigans to a minimum...

Wonder why the didn't go with the teams picking numbers. Ferrari always had 27 and 28.

Yet, letting the WDC wear #1 will screw this up.

Not really. Indy Car has that in place. Ryan Hunter-Reay was the first driver in a while to take the number.

I'm all for letting drivers pick their numbers. It helps develop a brand, a signature, something fans can get behind. Drivers in many series are known for their numbers. Jeff Gordon IS #24. Ken Block IS #43. Travis Pastrana IS #199. Hell, take Triple8 racing, they named a multinational team after their car number. And if the number belongs to the driver instead of the team (which it sounds like is the case), it'll be something a driver can hold on to throughout his F1 career, no matter what team he drives for (not even NASCAR does that. Dale Jr's #8 fiasco, anyone?). A Kimi fan will know to root for #69 whether it's for Ferrari next year or Red Bull in five years.

I just feel like it kind of craps on the tradition in the sport. That feeling is probably heightened by the double points in the season finale bullshit from yesterday.
I do understand though, I don't like it but I understand. I'll come to live with it at some point, I guess.

yes, good point of view as well as some true facts ! the idea to follow... "a driver in his F1 career by his number no matter what team he drives for"... is finally interesting !

I think that the teams/sponsors will have a bigger say in this than the drivers...
Kimi would probably go for no number at all, but I don't think the team would agree...
